Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers Guitar Lesson – Jeff Beck

Today we are going to take a look at the main melody for one of the greatest guitar instrumentals ever written, Jeff Beck's "Cause We've Ended As Lovers".

Written by his good friend Stevie Wonder, this beautiful instrumental demonstrates exactly why we all love Jeff Beck so much.

The opening melody from the song which we cover in this Cause We've Ended As Lovers guitar lesson is a great exercise in dynamics.

Just look at how he plays the melody the first time through. It is understated and mellow. He is creating a mournful mood here.

From there he ramps up the dynamics the second time through the melody adding a couple of aggressive bends to express the building tension in the instrumental.

If you listen to the entire instrumental while paying attention to these types of things you will see just what a masterful performance "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" is.

I think there are only a few moments like this in all of guitar history (SRV's take on "Little Wing" comes to mind) that a beautiful melody is thoroughly run through a great deal of dynamics and other musical devices.

If this Cause We've Ended As Loves guitar lesson does get a lot likes, (especially YouTube likes!) I will teach the entire song. And believe me, it would be an incredible experience to play Cause We've Ended As Lovers in it's entirety.

But for now, this incredible opening statement from the beginning of the track should keep you busy for a while. 🙂

Carl, Fantastic lesson–your transcription and sound are exactly like the recording. Thanks so much for making this available. Looking into your premium lessons as well. I think you should teach the rest of this song despite the apparent lack of interest. Beck is one of the true greats, and learning his stuff is a great way for the rest of us to develop (at least START to develop) first-class chops. Keep up the great work.

Yeah Scott, I was hoping for more of a response for this starter video but was a bit disappointed.

Beck is absolutely amazing though. If I had it my way, and could teach anything I wanted on the site, I would spend most of the time exposing artists that are drastically overlooked by guitarists just starting out these days. Hopefully I will be able to get to it soon. 🙂

Real shame about the lack of response for continuing this – Beck is the best!

Yeah it would take a lot of time to complete that is why I need more interest to do it. Might still do it anyway though. haha

This is a song I told myself a long time ago I would learn to play someday. A long time ago as in 1974 when Blow by Blow came out. I wore out an 8-track, lost a cassette and loaned my CD to a friend that lost it. Anyway, teaching all of it would be great. Thanks.

Hi Carl! I just joined your Premium subscription about two weeks ago and would absolutely LOVE if you would give some thought to completing the lesson(s) for this song. It too, is one of my ALL TIME favorites. I have wanted to learn this song since having first listened it on the Blow by Blow album. I hope you will (re)consider this and others requesting the same when time permits for you.

Thank you for this wonderful site! I’ve been playing my guitar every day since joining, with so much hope to be a much better player… and I truly believe it will be possible, thanks to your efforts here!
    Best Regards,
    Dory
