How To Hold A Guitar And Pick
How you hold a guitar and pick while your practicing can make or break your ability to progress in a timely manner.
Most guitarists just starting out neglect this simple step in their practicing and the result can sometimes lead to frustration or worse an injury to your wrists or forearms.
So this quick video is designed to help beginning students figure out a comfortable position to sit with the guitar while they practice. Every guitar player will be slightly different but the idea here to give you a good starting point to work from.
The video also covers how to hold a pick which I feel is an even BIGGER problem for beginning students. The pick is practically like your voice on the guitar and without proper control you will have a very difficult time saying what you want to say.
But its at least good to know that a couple of simple steps you can take when learning how to hold a pick can make the process a very easy and natural one for you.

Hi Carl. I’ve been playing guitar for many years now, mainly metal. I’m self taught and sadly have some pretty bad habits I need to break. The main one is how I hold the pick. My problem is I can hold it correctly while I’m playing slower, less challenging songs or playing/picking individual notes/strings. As soon as I start playing something fast with repetitive alternate strumming I just revert back to the way I’ve held the pick for years. I really want to progress to a much more technical level. Could you please tell me how best to attack this problem?

Hey Carl, sorry to bother you, but just a quick question. I play guitar for almost 6 years and sometimes I experience that I don’t have real feeling when playing with a fresh unused pick (the same pick just unused) in comparison to one that I’ve used for months… Is that normal or should I work on my picking technique more? Thank you!
