Def Leppard – Two Steps Behind Guitar Lesson

In this Two Steps Behind guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of this acoustic hit by Def Leppard note-for-note.

The song is in standard tuning.

"Two Steps Behind" has at times, 3 different guitar parts being played at the same time. Most notably the intro riff. Joe Elliot plays the basic chord progression while Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell add melodies that compliment each other very well to create a complex sound. I will show you each of those 3 parts separately.

The verse section uses basic open position chords, some of which switch from major to sus2 chords.

The pre-chorus introduces an F# minor bar chord, but other than that uses open position chords.

The chorus once again uses simple open position chords.

The coolest part of the song IMO is Phil Collen's guitar solo. This solo uses lots of melodic double-stops with the occasional fast lick. It is a nice melodic solo that compliments the song well.

The end of "Two Steps Behind" uses a chord progression a little different from anything earlier in the song, so make sure you don't forget to check that one out.

Have fun!
