Eric Johnson Style Chords Pt.1 Guitar Lesson

This free video guitar lesson is another in our look at Eric Johnson's guitar style. His chord work is one of the most spectacular elements of his playing and one of his most confusing as well.

Within these few video lessons I hope to help you understand the things you need to know to be able to create musical sequences with chords in the same style as Eric Johnson.

There are many elements of Eric Johnson's playing that kind of define his sound. His chord work more than anything else is his true musical signature to me.

Be sure to download the TAB PDF for this lesson below so you can more easily follow along with the lesson.

Hey Carl, you’ve really nailed these Eric Johnson style lessons. I was wandering if you have delved into any of the technique and playing style of Pat Metheny? I would be very interested to hear what you have to say about the topic. Very impressed overall with the site. Thank you for everything you do here.

Hey Jeff, I haven’t really followed much of Pat Metheny’s playing. At least not as much as I would like to since he is such an amazing player. I will look into it though and hopefully come up with something and put it within the Jazz Guitar University lessons soon.

Thanks for the great idea!! Carl.. 😀

Since I am new to the site I was wondering if I can I get any general insight on the fx you were using for the EJ chord lesson? I play my Strat through a Vox VT modeler. Thanks for the Academy format. Stay well.

Hey Jack, welcome to the academy!

I know that Eric’s clean tone uses a couple of Fender Twin Reverb amps, with an old TC Electronics Stereo Chorus, a EH Deluxe Memory Man then some reverb.

These EJ lessons were shot about a decade ago so I am not sure of the exact settings., I do know that at that time I was using a Line 6 POD HD500 for all the amps and FX.

I have a tone lesson on EJ’s lead guitar tone in the guitar tone course already, maybe I will take a look at doing one for his clean tone as well very soon. 🙂 It is my favorite tone of his!

Thanks for taking the time to respond regarding EJ tone (one of my favorites) and giving me enough background to dig a little. I am looking forward to learning more about what you will be offering but suffice to say there is plenty to do at present.
    Take Care
