Fuel Guitar Lesson – Metallica

In this video guitar lesson series, I will show you note-for-note how to play Metallica's high energy riff based hit "Fuel".

You will need to tune your guitar down a half-step to follow along with this lesson and the original recording. Those notes will be, starting from the 6th string, Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.

Originally appearing on their ReLoad album, "Fuel" is now a staple of Metallica's live performances. Many times they open their concerts with it.

In this Fuel guitar lesson series, we will go through all of those high energy riffs and solos note-for-note. Things move by pretty fast with this one so hold on to your seats!

The first video will cover all the rhythm guitar riffs and Kirk Hammett's guitar fills during the verse. These riffs included lots of hammer-ons and pull-offs, making the job of the picking hand a lot easier than most Metallica songs.

There are some really cool riffs to learn with this one. The main riff uses a quick hammer-on, fast picking and slight bends all in succession. Getting the timing of this riff down is essential before trying to get it up to speed. However, it does fit under the fingers very well once you get it all together.

All-in-all, the rhythm guitar parts found in "Fuel" represent many different styles of rhythm guitar playing and are a great study for anyone who loves hard rock.

In the second video lesson, I will take you through Kirk Hammett's guitar solo phrase-by-phrase. Like many of Kirk Hammett's solos, this solo uses lots of different lead guitar techniques used in a frantic yet melodic style. Those techniques include, bends, pre-bends, slides, staccato playing, hybrid picking and more.

It is essential to take solos like this one phrase-by-phrase (like I teach it in the lesson). That will make it much easier to put together in the end. Good Luck!
