Hybrid Picking Pt.2
In this second part of our intermediate level series on hybrid picking, we will begin to add the picking hand's ring finger into our hybrid picking passages.
The more you practice your hybrid picking exercises the more comfortable you will feel with the technique. You may feel you would like to grow your picking hand nails out a bit or you may prefer to just use the flesh of your finger instead. Whichever way you choose, it is essential to start slowly and make everything part of your muscle memory before trying to ramp it up to breakneck speed.
We begin this video lesson with some basic exercises on developing the ability to play chords using hybrid picking. We then move on to some country guitar style single note patterns.

Hey Carl, I love that country sound, especially in exercise 8! I need to buckle down and really master this lesson, since these sounds would be a nice addition to the usual rock & roll stuff I do.
Outstanding Carl… Thank you!! I am hoping that I can incorporate one or more of these practice patterns into the method James Burton used on the original version of Susie Q (in particular) where the pick is continually playing quarter notes on the 6th string E while the lead is being played across the remaining 5 strings with, primarily, the middle & ring fingers. I am hoping that one or more of your hybrid picking lessons here help me develop (with lots of practice of course) that mental split of the pick playing the quarter note base while picking the lead and the left hand of course, fretting. Eagerly looking forward to the future parts of these lessons. You’re doing an amazing job with them and they are so appreciated!! Thanks again!!
Hey Thomas, try checking out my Travis picking lessons. It is fingerstyle but you can also practice the exercises with a pick instead of using your thumb. 🙂
