Legato Exercises For Guitar
This video lesson demonstrates a useful exercise for developing a strong legato technique between each pair of fingers in the fret hand. It will also develop a good amount of flexibility.
Take your time with the more difficult stretches. Just let your hands gradually build up to them. As with anything physical in nature, if you feel pain STOP. Give it at least a few minutes before continuing.
This kind of guitar study is gradual, so be sure to treat it that way.
I have included a TAB PDF download of the exercises, but make sure to watch the video to learn how to move the exercises up the fretboard. Pay close attention to the fret hand positioning, as that can make or break your ability to develop good legato technique.

For most guitarists they mean the same thing. In reality legato just means connected or very smooth playing. Hammer-ons and pull-offs are just the technique that guitarists usually use in order to get that legato sound. 😀

Thanks for another great lesson, Carl. I actually have a quick question, when you were a teenager how often did you practice? I love playing guitar and am dedicated to my instrument, but lately i am having trouble balancing practice time and the rest of my life. Any input would be helpful. Your videos are always great, would love to donate when i have the funds.
Well I practiced a ton. I didn’t really have much of a life other than guitar through my teens and into my early twenties. After I graduated high school I ramped up my practice to over 10 hours a day on average.
That is not the case anymore but I would love to have that amount of time to sit and play again. But I have to feed myself first so that has been kinda getting in the way the past decade. 🙂
Just remember, you get back whatever you put into it. A good practice routine for an hour a day is much better than some rambling practice session that lasts 8 hours.

Hi thanks again Carl studying your guitar lessons 5 days a week me and my wife have been singing and I have been playing rhythm guitar since I was a kid but just started my lead guitar journey with you one of the best teachers I have ever taken lessons from! 🙂 would you do some major study on alex lifeson plus trying to use all of there guitar playing styles to help me with development of writing my own song and musical composition so I can throw some of there solo phrases, licks, or riffs in my own composition but of course most of all come up with my own ideas. Would you do these lesson formats people need to learn how to do their own stuff. By the way all ready learned the main solo phrase from some David Gilmore music compositions. Com numb. Hey Drew, at the moment I do have lessons on improvisation, but I plan on a HUGE rock improvisation section in the Premium section of the site in the coming weeks.
It will cover many different player’s styles. I would also like to do a music composition course, but at the moment I am still working out how to teach that kind of thing since it can be quite a vague subject.

at a point of time i was ready to give up my guitar . but ur lessons made me pick that thing up and get through it.
