Minor Seventh Chords

This lesson continues our study of seventh chords with all of the Minor Seventh chord shapes in the CAGED Sequence.

You should be able to see how they work off of the same root notes as the Major Seventh chords from the last lesson.

Here is the accompanying PDF download for the lesson.

In the next lesson we will concentrate on the Dominant 7th chord, by far the most used seventh chord in music.

    Hey Carl,

Been following along with your lessons, been really helpful for improving on my technique (especially keep strings quiet).

Noticed that the last chord in this lesson (the C shape) has omitted the 5th (no G). It has that nice airy feel with the octave of the 3rd though. I guess an alternate fingering at that root position that adds the 5th (and looks like the other C shapes) could be:

    x
    11
    12
    13
    15
    x

Hey Andrew, yeah that certainly is an option there. For this lesson, I sort of stuck with the more common ways of playing these chords through the CAGED sequence.

For 7th chords and larger on the guitar, the 5th is usually the first tone to be omitted. The fingering you suggested can be very difficult for a lot of players because of the stretch between the ring and pinky fingers, especially in lower positions. 🙂
