Learn To Fly Guitar Lesson – Foo Fighters

In this Learn To Fly guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this monster hit by the Foo Fighters in it's entirety.

Originally released as the debut single from their 1999 album There Is Nothing Left to Lose, "Learn To Fly" quickly became one of the Foo Fighters' signature hits, as it remains to this day.

The great thing is that from a guitarist's perspective, "Learn To Fly" is a pretty easy song to master. I would say any upper beginner level guitarist and up won't have much trouble with it. That just goes to show you that you don't have to write virtuosic guitar riffs to stand out. The ability to write catchy hooks and melodies will take you much further. 🙂

In any case, the opening of the song includes a short octave melody played by Dave Grohl. The most important thing to focus on when playing octaves is the muting of the unwanted strings. If you are unfamiliar with how to properly pay octaves, I will be covering it within the video lesson.

The verse and the chorus of the song uses very similar chord structures, albeit played with very different dynamics. But you will be able to see just how much mileage you can get out of those chords in the lesson.

The only other part we will need to learn is the bridge section. This bridge section has quite a bit different feel than the rest of the song. It has darker vibe about it and sounds more aggressive. However, from a playing point of view, it is still just power chords and open position chords so you will probably breeze through it in no time.

Have fun learning this great track from one of rock biggest bands!

Carl this was a fun one, and quick to learn. Any chance of “times like these?”

    Hi Carl,

I sent a message to your other email. I’m sending this email as a request for your help with a lead solo.
Could you help with the lead solo by Joe Bonamassa’s version of “Going Down” from “Live at the Greek”.

In particular, the lead solo(s) at 2:14 to 2:33 and 2:48 to 5:06. He’s really smoking there!

Really appreciate any help you can provide.

    Thanks,

    Tim
