Mr. Jones Guitar Lesson – Counting Crows

In this lesson I am going to show you how to play all the chords to the Counting Crows smash hit from the 90's "Mr. Jones".

This Mr. Jones guitar lesson would be great for the beginning level guitarist because the chords are note only simple, but we also don't have many of them to learn.

There are only a few different chord progressions to learn including the verse, chorus and a short bridge section. These sections use a lot of the same chords as well so learning the verse will help you with the other two chord progressions.

In the bridge you will see an F major 7th chord used. The chord voicing requires you to use your thumb to finger the note on the 6th string. This is a very common technique used in just about any guitar style, so if you are unfamiliar with it this is a great place to start. Especially since the bridge doesn't require a strumming pattern so you can concentrate fully on the fret-hand.

As for that strumming pattern, it is a simple 8th note feel. As I mention a lot in my lessons that use this strumming style, it is important not to get bogged down with counting up-strokes and down-strokes when strumming. Simply put, you need to get the up/down motion moving in a smooth 8th note rhythm. You will use your ear to decide when to hit the strings or simply glide over them without making contact. You will also use your ear to know when to accent certain strums.

Once you learn this concept, strumming becomes pretty much second nature. 🙂

Enjoy! Carl...
