No Quarter Guitar Lesson – Led Zeppelin
In this No Quarter guitar lesson video series, I will show you Jimmy Page's guitar parts for this Led Zeppelin masterpiece note-for-note.
On the original recording, the tuning is one-half step down. Apparently this was created by using a vari-speed effect in order to give the song fuller sound. In most live situations, Led Zeppelin played the song in standard tuning instead. I will be playing it in the original tuning of one half-step down (Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb).
The rhythm guitar parts are quite simple for "No Quarter". The song is dominated by John Paul Jones' electric piano. When Page's guitar parts do enter the song, he does so with a couple of really cool clean chords that can be played a couple of different ways. I will demonstrate various was to play those chords so that you can find one that works for you.
In the second video lesson, I will show you Jimmy Page's guitar solo. Now to be clear, this solo is created by different guitar solos layered on top of each other. One uses a clean tone and the other a high gain lead tone. I will show you a version of the solo that combines both parts, always playing the most prominent part, so you can recreate the solo pretty convincing with just one guitar.

I planned on doing the solo last week but then had some trouble with my ears due to allergies which made it too difficult to hear the song in order to transcribe.

I don’t know if it is too much asking since you are a very busy man producing so many video lessons, but is it possible to include your choices of Amp models and cabs and effects you use on your Axe FX into your lessons? You could keep it basic, for example : for this lessons I chose this amp with this cab and used a chorus and a reverb effect.

Yeah I do need to start doing that Georg, I am actually using a Line 6 POD HD500X lately to do the lessons since I can do channel switching with it.
Both the Line 6 and Axe FX are great though. I will try to see the best way to incorporate the tones into the lessons without delaying the teaching too much. 🙂

I will have to check on the exact settings, but it is pretty much a nice clean amp with a hall reverb played on the neck pickup. 🙂
Sorry, I meant what device(s) are you using for effects like delay, reverb, etc., not only for this song but in general? Axe-Fx? Other?
Ah I just read Georg’s posts above, from which it appears you are using an Axe-Fx.
Hey Karsten, for this particular lesson I used a Line 6 POD HD500X which I started using a couple weeks ago because I needed something with a built-in pedal.
From late 2009 (when this site started) I have used a Line 6 POD X3 Live, Line 6 POD HD500, Axe-FX II and now the Line 6 POD HD500X. 🙂

Do you ever share your presets? Between work, studying for exams, wife and dogs, there’s barely enough time to learn how to play (although these super sweet lessons sure do make it easy).
Hey David! I will be doing a lot more tone lessons on the site very soon including sharing my presets and also demonstrating how to achieve that same preset even though you might not have the same processor I am using.
