Runnin’ With The Devil Guitar Lesson – Van Halen

In this Runnin' With Devil guitar lesson series, I will show you note-for-note what is not only one of the greatest rock songs of all time, but was also our introduction to the legendary guitar work of Eddie Van Halen.

As the opening track on Van Halen's debut album, "Running with the Devil" had to start the now legendary album with a huge riff with a great hook.

In the first video lesson below, we will take a look at that classic riff as played by Eddie Van Halen.

This riff uses basic triad shapes across the second third and fourth strings and also has a little bit of Hendrix influence in the way that Eddie hammers from one triad to the next at one part in the riff.

For many guitarists this is their very first Van Halen riff that they learn. It's pretty attainable by most ability levels and it is also an instant classic. 🙂

In the second video lesson, we will tackle the rest of the song including the two solo sections.

Almost all of the verses are identical except for one fill in each. I will demonstrate the fill for each verse.

The two solo sections are almost identical as well except for a one note difference. Because of that, I hope it won't take you very long to get up an "Runnin'" with this one!
