Since I’ve Been Loving You Guitar Lesson – Led Zeppelin

One of the most requested songs ever here at GL365, "Since I've Been Loving You" is thought by many to be Jimmy Page's finest recording.

In this Since I've Been Loving You guitar lesson series, I will take you note-for-note through one of the most epic blues guitar songs ever recorded.

Jimmy really pulls out all the stops in this one, so it will take a few video lessons to do the song justice.

If you are familiar with "Since I've Been Loving You", you know that it is pretty much a guitar solo from beginning to end. There will be a lot of notes to get down, but we will take it phrase-by-phrase so it shouldn't be too hard to follow.

In the first video lesson, I will tackle Jimmy Page's intro guitar solo, in addition to the first verse and chorus sections. That makes up about the first 2 1/2 minutes of the song.

Throughout the song, but especially during the intro solo and first verse, Jimmy Page incorporates a very careful use of dynamics during his solos. You will need to constantly vary how hard you are picking the strings, as well as tweak the volume knob on your guitar to emulate all of those dynamics. Jimmy Page of course does this perfectly and it sounds incredible. Just listen to how the solos develop dynamically, it is just as important to the song as the actual notes he is playing.

In the second lesson, I will teach the second verse and chorus, along with the main guitar solo. This main solo is definitely going to be the biggest challenge of the song for us guitar players. Jimmy Page's main guitar solo for "Since I've Been Loving You" has been called the greatest guitar solo ever recorded by many music critics and Led Zeppelin fans alike. It is hard to argue with them after learning how to play this mighty solo.

In the third and final video lesson, I will show you how to play all the remaining guitar parts in the song after the main solo is over.

As many notes as there are in the beautiful song by Led Zeppelin, I feel that none of them are wasted. In my opinion, "Since I've Been Living You" is one of the greatest moments in music history, and after learning the song with these lessons, I hope you will feel the same way. Good Luck!

Carl...

Carl, love the lessons. I believe I saw in one video that you use the Axe FX for your tones. Not sure if that’s still the case and I’m sorry if it’s been asked and answered elsewhere, but have you considered including the preset you use with the song lessons? I know they don’t remotely translate sometimes as everybody has different equipment and you might use custom IRs, but I’d find it a helpful starting point. Thanks for the site!

Hey Sean, in fact I have been thinking about giving tone settings for my new lessons. I couldn’t really do it with the older stuff because I usually dial up a preset and go without writing anything down. Those older lessons would be impossible to figure out what the preset was.

Hopefully it won’t be too time consuming to do. Look for some of those to start popping up soon. 🙂

Hi Carl, i have messaged you regarding this before but cant remember which thread it was to look for a reply so anyway, I was wondering if you were thinking of putting any Yes or Focus stuff on here. I love the unique style of both Steve Howe and Jan Ackerman so would be great to see some of their songs on here? I do appreciate that some of the songs are about 3 hours long but anyway, any plans for putting them on here in the future? By the way, only discovered your site recently and I’m well impressed…keep up the excellent work

    Thanks

Hey Colin, at the moment I am working on getting the new GL365 Academy live on the site. After that, the academy lessons will be my main focus and the YouTube song lessons will be secondary.

I still hope to get a couple new songs up a week though. Because of the smaller amount of new song lessons, I will be mostly focusing on the classics that are requested a lot instead of just trying to put as many lessons out there as possible. I think doing some Yes is a possibility though, if I get enough people behind it. 🙂

Hey Gary, I wish I could but that would violate international copyright law.
      Sorry! Carl…

Hi Carl is there an easier way to play the second verse of since I’ve been loving you instead of using the regular C minor chord? I just just don’t have the coordination to make that particular chord in a timely manner when it’s time to play that verse of the song. Hope you can help! I’ve really enjoyed your song lessons throughout the years. Thanks! Dennis
