Using a Metronome To Practice Difficult Licks

In this video guitar lesson, I am going to show you one of the best ways I have found to master difficult guitar licks.

We all know the feeling of having most of a guitar solo under our fingers, but there seems to always be a couple licks within the solo that we just can't seem to ever get up to speed.

This lesson will help you systematically deal with that all-to-common problem in an efficient manner.

The lick I breakdown in this video uses a lot of economy picking. If you are unfamiliar with this technique, this will be a great place to start learning it! Economy picking is pretty much the secret to many famous player's fast licks including Joe Bonamassa, Eric Johnson, Marty Friedman and countless others.

The key to using a metronome is to be creative in how you use it. It keeps track of your progress by letting you know the exact BPM you can play at and keep you in perfect time, but that is only the beginning.

Using the speed burst concept (which I feel is the quickest way to develop advanced technique), I will show you how to take a guitar lick or exercise that you are having trouble with, then show you what I do to get it up to speed while staying very relaxed and precise. The metronome is your best friend for this type of practice.

I hope this motivates you to do this with your own difficult licks. The concept is pretty easy to apply to any playing situation (solos, chord changes etc..).

If you don't have a metronome, there are tons of free metronome apps available both for your phone, tablet or web based browser. So you shouldn't have any trouble getting a hold of one.
