Volbeat – Still Counting Guitar Lesson
In this Still Counting guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of this modern rock hit by Volbeat note-for-note.
The tuning I am using in this video lesson and that was used on the original recording is one whole-step down for every string on the guitar. That would make the tuning, starting from the 6th string, D G C F A D.
"Still Counting" starts with a tight clean tone rhythm using basic bar chords. I will show you the strumming pattern used at the beginning, then the simplified version he plays when the vocals come in.
From there the band launches into a scorching double-time section that requires the ability to play rapid downstroke muted rhythms. I would say this section is definitely the most challenging section of the entire song. This double-time section contains 3 separate riffs back-to-back, so I will break each one down individually.
The verse and chorus sections are much easier to play so they probably won't give you much trouble since they are pretty straightforward.
There is a cool muted groove riff a little later in the song that leads into a quick harmony guitar part. You will hear this section a couple times within the song with the only difference being the very end of the harmony guitar part.
The outro of the song consists of a melodic guitar solo which is probably one of the easiest solos Volbeat has ever recoded. It sounds really cool though!

I just want to say that you are a Godsend! I have been “playing” (for lack of a better word) the guitar since I was about 18 and I’m 48 now. I have never had a guitar lesson in my life, I can’t read a lick of music and I’m either too lazy or too impatient to fumble through tablature. (Probably both).
The problem is lack of time. I have 2 young daughters and of course I work all day. I get to play approximately 2 hours a night after they are in bed. Your lessons make learning the songs I love and want to learn how to play so much more attainable and I thank you!!!! I would love to become a member and start learning a song a week. (Hey, I’m slow!!!!). But time to devote just isn’t on my side. Maybe some day!
I have one request that I have been struggling with for about a week trying to pickup what I can from youtube videos and such, but picking up licks at fullspeed is tough! The 3 lead parts in Volbeat’s Lola Montez. I think I have the first one down, but the other 2 are driving me nuts! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I think it is going a little fast around 6 minutes. but the lesson is really cool.
So what I am wondering is if you can do it a little slower at that part carl 🙂
Well the pace of the lessons is relative to the player’s skill level that is learning the song, so it is not possible for me to get it just right for everyone.
If I go very slow the more experienced players will leave negative comments that I am talking too much and the lesson just drags. If I speed it up a bit, more of the less experienced players have trouble keeping up and leave negative comments.
So I go at a pace that I feel if a good middle ground area. I teach everything phrase-by-phrase or section by section. You can always replay that section as many times as you want. But when it comes to the tempo that the lesson is taught, it will be impossible to please everyone. Believe me I have tried. 🙁
What do you use for your distortion sound.? I have a variety of FX equipment, but just can’t seem to get that sound ..
