Week Two Guitar Technique Workout

In this week's guitar technique workout we will focus on developing those legato chops.

As with just about any other kind of physical workout it is important, particularly with this type of guitar technique study, not to over due it.

The workout I demonstrate in this video is a variation of one showed to me by the great Grammy award winning classical guitarist Scott Tennant.

It involves a bit of a spider crawling type of effect as you go across the fingerboard.

Not only is this guitar technique workout great for fret-hand endurance, but it is a great coordination exercise as well.

Now there are times in this workout that I really pound away on that pinky. You will actually find that your pinky muscle, when fully developed, is by far the strongest finger on your hand. It just gets a bum rap since it has such a smaller landing surface and is quite a bit shorter than the other fingers.

But just think about it, whenever you grab anything with your whole hand you are actually using your pinky muscle to do it. It makes up almost half of your palm!

So any good guitar technique workout should really focus on developing that pinkly muscle in my opinion.

Be sure you get a good snap off of the string when doing the pull-offs, and try to minimize the movements in the fingers as well. Ideally you will never let your fingertips get much more than a half inch above the string at any time.

Hi. I’m 51 years old from Belgium and started to play guitar since one year on a Squier Fender Strat Affinity second hand. When I have paid all my invoices I have just money to eat the rest of the month and it’s really cool to find a teatcher who teach for free. I’m very interested in Shreddind ( Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani…) and it’s very difficult to find free lessons structurated for beguinner, so I did My own way with what I have founded. Sorry not to be able to give you money, but if I can help you in another way, don’t hesitate to ask me. Firs of All I will share on my Facebook Page for al my guitarist friends all around the world. You can find me there at “Abdounnour Bubule” and on Youtube at “Abdounnour”
    You’re always welcome.
    Regards from Belgium
    Pierre

I’m finding it literally IMPOSSIBLE not to pull my fingers back towards the bottomeof the fretboard when I’m hammering on. Do you think this is due to a lack of finger strength? I’ve been playing for ten years but its mainly just been messing around jamming, I’ve never taken the time to actually work on technique until recently. should I continue to practice this until the finger strength comes or will that just add to the bad habits i’ve probably already aquired?

Hey Pat, I think I would really need to see a video of you hammering on to be able to diagnose something like that. 🙁
