Creating Guitar Chords From Scale Forms
In this video guitar lesson, I am going to do something a little bit different. Instead of showing you tons of well worn chord forms that are passed down from previous generations of guitar players, or boring you with tons of music theory to create your own, I will show you a simple method to come up with your own chord voicings.
Let me preface all of this by saying that learning the theory behind chords and their function in music is essential. There are many lessons at GL365 to help you study all of that. But for an experiment, lets drop all of that theory stuff a truly use our ears to come up with chords that we like the sound of.
When given a large number of chords to learn, be it triads, sevenths, or more, it can be difficult to create musical chord progressions with them. Because of that, many guitar players don't bother with it at all.
How I hope to solve this problem in this lesson is to show you how to create unique a very musical chord forms using chords built strictly from scale forms. You should download the PDF of the 3 notes-per-string major scales in order to follow along with this lesson. However, as I mention in the video, you can use absolutely any scale you want (CAGED, major, minor, modal, exotic, etc...).
The process is actually very simple, but you will see from the video lesson how it can have very dramatic results on the sound of the chords and chord progressions you play. Besides that, it is actually a lot of fun to create these chord voicings. You can then memorize the ones you like the most and use them in your own music for a very unique sound.
After you have come up with a chord you like, it would also be a great idea to go back and try to figure out what chord it actually is. That isn't essential, but can be a great theory exercise.
