How to Practice Guitar With A Purpose

In this two-part video guitar lesson series, I will talk about what I feel are the most important elements to focus on when practicing and when creating a practice routine.

By the amount of messages I get on the subject, I feel that many players are confused as to what to practice and when. This leads them to feel they are not getting the most out of the time they spend practicing, causing a lot of frustration.

Before you watch the videos, you may want to download the PDF below which summarizes what I talk about in the videos.

How to Practice With A Purpose PDF

Make sure you watch the videos in full since I will go into a lot more detail than the PDF summary shows you.

My goal for this video series is to help you learn how to create a practice routine based around what YOU want to learn which in the end is going to keep you motivated and playing more and more.

There is also a section (starting at the beginning of the second video), where I will show you how I personally tackle technically difficult passages in music. It is all about knowing how the human brain assimilates new actions and helping it do the same for new guitar techniques in the quickest way possible.

The technique demonstrations show my personal favorite ways of learning a difficult guitar lick.

I hope this helps you guys get the most out of your practice!

Conway Twitty songs! That’s awesomely hilarious!

Hi Carl. What is the best way to contact you about formulating a lesson plan for me? Would it be the contact form? I got a lot from these two videos, but I still would rather you structured my practice routine, because sometimes I lose my way and forget to practice certain things.

Hey Ian, yeah the contact from would be the best way. Don;t use the Ask Carl form since those are just for YouTube questions and I don’t read them until I shoot another video.

Just email me some info about your goals and what kind of stuff you think you need to work on and how much time you have to practice and I will help you formulate a plan. 🙂

I will be out of town this weekend but will be able to answer on Monday at the latest. 🙂

    Hello Carl:

These couple of videos were kind of eye opener to me. I had some ideas about how to begin my first steps in learning guitar, but not fully structured or even complete. Now I have a better plan, and feel more confident on where to go next. My plan is build a more solid path, with some theory and some practice.

    Thanks!

Thanks for your answer yesterday. The donation site just asks for my credit card. I don’t put my card number on line because I have been burnt previously and I am too old to trust the internet. they already have too much on me. We use PayPal mostly.
Anyway, I will find a way to sent you a donation. I think that your teaching style is terrific. I like the three views of your guitar, the way you explain things, and the like. The songs on your list of lessons are not the things I want to learn yet. Anji by Davey Graham, Maleguena, and things like that are my genre rather than Nirvana, the Black Crows, etc.
Anyway, I now want to learn more about the guitar itself, focus on my hand and finger placement, and whatever I will be able to do without a right arm for 6-8 weeks.
No need to respond as I don’t want to take more of your time. But will subscribe once I get more of the basics and my shoulder recovers. I know you trust your system, but I just need to be able to pay you with a system that I know is secure. Its an age and generational thing.
    My best,
    Thanks,
    Marc reisman

Hey Marc, you can use Paypal for the subscription as well. On every checkout page there is a Paypal option at the top of the page. 🙂

Carl- I am a new subscriber and have been watching your videos for months. Your first one I watched was for Melissa. I was wondering if you could let me know the chords to the key change section in Don Henley’s Heart of the Matter. I’ve got the other chords down, but not the key change section. I’ve been playing guitar for about 8 months now, and am trying to learn this song. Thank you!
