How To Use A Guitar Capo – Beginner

In this free video guitar lesson you will learn how to use a capo on the guitar. I have had some requests from viewers asking how to use a guitar capo. I thought instead of answering via email a full video guitar lesson would be easier.

It is a pretty simple process and by the end on the video you will fully understand not only how to use a guitar capo, but why so many guitar players use a guitar capo as well.

Just about every well known guitar player has used a capo at one time or another on the guitar. It can be used to create some dazzling effects, or just to change the key of a song. Whatever you would like to use a guitar capo for, I hope you find this simple video guitar lesson helpful.

Enjoy!! Carl..

Capos are a lot of fun. I used to think they were for cheating, but I’ve changed my mind.

Hi, I was kinda hoping you showed me HOW to set a capo properly. I always have to retune my guitar if I place a capo, some notes will get sharp (I guess because my floating tremolo gets lifted?)

    Kind regards,

    Victor

You should set it up right behind the fret for the best intonation. 🙂

hey Carl, when you put the Capo on the 2nd fret (any other fret). what key would that be in? w/o the Capo, it’s just standard tuning.

Hey Craig, it is not really in any particular key, since you can play multiple keys with the capo at the 2nd fret. The key depends on the chords that you play. However, you will hear some players call it the key of F# since F# is the note that is at the 2nd fret on the low E string. So they will call the key whatever the note is on the low E string that they place the capo at. 😉

aah ok. I thought if you strum the strings open with the Capo on any fret it would be in the Key of whatever that fret you have it on, like the 2nd would be in the Key of F#.

do you have any videos on “Keeping Timing”? like, eight, sixteenth, 2/4 all works?

Definitely, my beginning guitar course has a complete section called “Rhythm Foundations” that will show you how to feel those simple rhythms naturally without overthinking it. 🙂
