Major Chord Family Extensions Using The CAGED Method

In this lesson we will take what you have already learned from the CAGED method lessons here at guitarlessons365.com, and put that to good use in learning larger chord forms (ie. 9ths, 11ths and 13ths).

If you aren't very familiar with the CAGED system yet, just check out those chord lessons in the beginner and intermediate guitar lesson archives.

It will also help for you to know the basic chord theory that you can get from the Understanding Keys lesson and the lesson on Triads found in the music theory archive.

Be sure to try and take these different chord formulas to all of your basic CAGED chord forms. It will really open up a lot of doors into visualizing the neck if you figure out your own voicings.

Hey Carl-Very clear lesson. For goodness sakes I have been asking people for years to explain this and nobody could just simply do it. And i am talking about advanced players.

One question: Are these all the chord extensions for the key of C major? If so, that means just extrapolate to all the other keys- and in all the other caged shapes – and you’d basically know every chord, correct?

    Thanks Chris

Yeah that is one way off learning your chords. As long as you know the formula to makes up the chord extensions of the larger chord forms you can turn any CAGED form into a 9th, 11th or 13th with ease. 😀

      Cheers! Carl..

Hey Carl. Awesome site with clear and practical lessons. One question: In this video and pdf tab for this lesson, the Cmaj13 chord (chord second to last) has no 3rd (as far as I noticed, it has CGBDA). It is confusing to me because I thought major or minor chords are defined by the 3rd. I know that the 5th can be omitted in extended chords, but not the 3rd for major and minor chords, otherwise they would be like sus chords. Am I mistaken?
    Thanks
