Van Halen – Hot For Teacher Video Guitar Lessons

This one is a fun one. Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" is a fast shuffle tune that has become a classic.

Eddie Van Halen pulls out all the stops here in this one from his classic tapping intro and fast shuffle rhythms, to his monstrous solo.

This tune is a feast of Eddie Van Halen guitar techniques.

Hot For Teacher is incredibly fun to play after you get it together. HAVE FUN!!

Hi, Carl. Just curious…what are you doing when you go the ‘quiet’ section? Currently, I’m switching my Strat to the neck bridge…not working so well…hard to do without losing my way. And the thing with the volume knob, just ends tragically. I’m using Guitar Rig 5, which is awesome, but i don’t have a foot controller. If the problem is hardware, i’d like to know where to invest.

    thanks, Mike

I simply switch to a preset that is mostly clean with a little grit on it. I know Eddie rolls of the volume down a lot to clean up the sound and I like doing that as well. But for this video I just switched to a different preset I think. It was filmed a really long time ago so I may be wrong.

      Carl..

Hi, Carl. I am a proud patron of your website and have done almost 2 dozen song lessons on your site in 2 years. I am now starting Hot For Teacher with no real finger tapping skills. I am an advanced intermediate player (maybe just intermediate) and I wonder if I’m biting off more than I can chew with this song. Would I be better off starting with another Van Halen song or songs? I want to go into VH so it’s going to happen, but just not sure if I’m ready for Hot. Thanks for your input.. —Mike Schiavone

Hey Michael! The tapping parts in Hot For Teacher aren’t really that difficult compared to some of Eddie’s other stuff, just as long as you can do the left hand stretches in the intro.

So I say go for it!

      Carl…

Love your work. You have a great teaching style. I’ve been playing a long time, and sometimes turn to your lessons to validate what I’ve come up with or see how you’re doing a part that I couldn’t get.

For what it’s worth, I suspect a lot of your “students” would really benefit from your also including some timing discussion into your lessons. I don’t mean a simple reference to 4/4 or “speed up” or “slow down”; but rather, seeing you and hearing you play over a metronome, so students can really understand when notes/chords should be played.

This idea came to me when watching your opening tapping for Hot For Teacher. While the tapping isn’t terribly difficult, the timing / shuffle feel, however, is. That’s an aspect of the song that I think is probably the most difficult.

Would love if if you had some sort of timing machine or metronome running — especially slowed down — when you do lessons.

I know that would add significant length to your lessons, but I’m sure would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Carl. Thanks a bunch. This is a beast indeed but your teaching makes it “almost” easy to learn! Very detailed, at the right speed and the three views helps so much to understand the picking !
Humble suggestion…not even sure how to do this but if there were some markers during the videos this would make it even better ( e.g. intro , chorus, solo, outdo).
But hey…this is almost perfect do not mind my suggestion!
