Drop Dead Legs Guitar Lesson – Van Halen
In this Drop Dead Legs guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this incredible Van Halen classic off of their massively successful 1984 album.
The tuning is Drop D Tuning. That is, starting from the 6th string, D A D G B E.
Eddie Van Halen' riffs throughout "Drop Dead Legs" are some of my favorite that he ever wrote. The main riff is played during the verse sections, and it employs a very tricky technique that sounds like he is using a whammy bar, but in fact, he is creating that effect with his frethand fingers. Really ingenious how he puts it together all within a rock solid and laid back groove.
The other main section of "Drop Dead Legs" moves all over the fretboard while using a number of techniques including some legato based 3 note-per-string licks. It is really fun to play once you get it under your fingers.
Although I usually cover the solos of the songs that I teach, I have decided not to even try with this one. This solo has many parts that are just un-recreatable. For that reason, I have decided to skip it. 🙂
Have fun guys!
