Koto Technique ala Eric Johnson

In this quick video guitar lesson, I will demonstrate how to play a cool sounding guitar technique called "Koto Technique".

The player I have heard this from the most is the great Eric Johnson. However, I am sure there are many players that use this technique.

The concept is actually very simple. You will be picking directly behind the note you are fretting to create a very thin and bright sound. That is accompanied all most simultaneously with a quick bend and release with the fret-hand.

You will then pull-off to the note you are holding in your fret-hand.

I suggest starting out by using mostly pentatonic scales with this technique then perhaps experimenting with other scale types.

Also, if the index finger of your picking hand isn't used to fretting notes (which it probably isn't), I suggest just practicing this technique a couple minutes a day until you build up a callus so that you won't get a blistered finger. 🙂

Have fun!

Sorry about that! We just moved to a new and improved server last night and it looks like not all of the folders came along with the move.

I will get the web developer on it right away! Thanks for letting me know!
