David Gilmour – Comfortably Numb Guitar Solos

In this artist tone series lesson, we will take an in-depth look at David Gilmour's iconic solo tone heard on "Comfortably Numb".

If you have one of the Line 6 Helix series of processors (Helix, Helix Rack, Helix LT or Helix Native), feel free download the Helix preset below by clicking the "Download Lesson File" button.

Even if you don't have a Helix processor, this tutorial will give you a good run down of the types of amps and effects that David Gilmour used to create this stunning guitar tone. So using your own modeling processor or real live amps and effects should be relatively straight forward.

I will talk in-depth about not only the high headroom amps that David Gilmour prefers, but also the multiple gain pedals to push the amp through and his delicate use of a rotary speaker.

There is also the consideration that not everything you are hearing on the record is actually part of Gilmour's signal chain. Instead, some effects are added in post production but will need to be added to the signal chain in order to recreate what you are hearing on the original recording.

Have fun with this one guys. This tone is a classic and a lot of fun to play with.

Hey Carl. Do you think you can do an Artist Tones of Steve Clark Live In The Round? I love your Def Leppard lessons. Thanks Bryan from North Carolina!

    Hey Carl,
I’ve really enjoyed these Gilmour tone tutorials and have modified them to work on my old HD500X. Thanks again for your lessons. Now I’m in a Pink Floyd / David Gilmour mood again !
Any chance that you may do a song lesson on some of his live gigs. ie the Comfortably Numb solo either from Live in Pompei or Gdansk or Sorrow from Pompei or Pulse?

    Thanks Tom from Ontario, Canada

Yeah those live tones are quite a bit different from the original recordings so they will need there own lessons.

I plan on doing a ton of David Gilmour tones in the future since he is probably the only guitarist that I cover on the site that everybody loves whether they are into rock, metal or blues.

But the next few will be covering other artist tones and there will be one new one a week. Should be fun! Great to hear you were able to work the patch up in the HD500X by following along with the signal chain in the lesson. That is a great processor!

Love these tone lessons! Dogs would be really nice if you do more David Gilmour! Something “bluesy” would be great also; Thin Lizzy from the Jailbreak era, or some Gary Moore or Jimmy Page?

I got S.R.V’s “Pride And Joy” tone lesson coming this weekend. Is that bluesy enough? 🙂
