Monkey Wrench Guitar Lesson – Foo Fighters

In this Monkey Wrench guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this fun Foo Fighters classic note-for-note.

The tuning used in this video lesson and on the original recording is dropped "D" tuning. That is, starting from the 6th string, D A D G B E.

The intro of "Monkey Wrench" consists of big power chords with Dave Grohl playing a repeated melody line over it. This melody line uses double-stops throughout with an open string along with the fretted note. The open string changes half-way through the melody line from the open B to the open high E string.

For most of the verse, pre-chorus, chorus and bridge sections they use simple power chord shapes with a lot of aggressive rhythms. Those rhythms will probably be the hardest thing to get right for most people. I will show each riff in the order that it appears in the song.

In the chorus we have two guitar parts working together, but for the rest of the song, all guitars play the same rhythm parts.

The melody from the intro reappears a few times in the song but the good thing is it is always played the same way.

I hope you guys enjoy learning this great early Foo Fighters song!
