Parisienne Walkways Guitar Lesson – Gary Moore

In the world of famous guitar solos my personal opinion is that you can't find much better than Gary Moore's guitar work on "Parisienne Walkways" from his 1979 album Back On The Streets.

Gary Moore is in full force with this one playing in his trademark soaring slow blues style. In fact, I would say that Gary Moore is definitely one of my favorite soloists of all time. Especially in his more bluesy playing.

In this Parisienne Walkways guitar lesson we will learn how to play the opening solo of the song which is also it's main theme. It is a gorgeous melody that follows the underlying chord progression beautifully. It is one of those melodies where, as soon as you hear it for the first time you will never forget it.

For his part, Gary Moore uses a multitude of guitar techniques to play this melody in an effort to alter the dynamics or phrasing of the melody. Within this short intro solo we have bends, slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs. We also have a little rake thrown in there for good measure.

As with just about anything played by Gary Moore, a healthy vibrato on any of the sustained notes can really help this melody sing. This isn't the easiest thing in the world to do especially when you are trying to apply vibrato to a note that is bent into pitch.

I think this solo is great to practice whether you are just getting started with soloing or have lots of experience. There will always be something in it that you can practice. Plus it is such a great melody, simply looping this solo over and over again is a great way to practice. 🙂

The soloing that occurs throughout the rest of the song is quite a bit more challenging. Plus the haunting chord progression is really nice as well.
