Tool – Stinkfist Guitar Lesson

In this Stinkfist guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this classic by Tool note-for-note.

The tuning that I am using in this lesson and the one that guitarist Adam Jones used on the original recording is Drop "D" tuning. Starting from the 6th string, D A D G B E.

Adam Jones has one of the most unique guitar styles in the rock/metal world, and "Stinkfist" shows this off to great effect.

The opening main riff is one that can be a bit tricky to give it just the right amount of inflection. It might look to two simple notes, but the riff is much more than that.

The verse sections use a bit of stripped down and more rhythmically direct way of playing the main riff.

From there, Adam ramps of the energy employing power chords moved around the fretboard at a pretty rapid pace.

Eventually we get to the super cool interlude section where Jones plays some dissonant repeated guitar licks that perfectly compliment the underlying music. He then slowly builds up the intensity with some heavily palm-muted 16th notes and speed bursts that eventually give way to a a more aggressive burst of power chords that are allowed to ring freely without palm muting.

The bridge uses a chord shape that you might not have seen before. This chord form is nothing but a power chord with more voices added on the G and B strings.

As you can, tell there is a lot going on in "Stinkfist" guitar-wise, but I think it should be easily approach for any intermediate level guitarist.

I hope you guys enjoying learning one of the greatest songs of the nineties!
