American Pie Guitar Chords Lesson – Don McLean

In this American Pie guitar chords lesson video, I will show you how to play this acoustic classic by Don McLean in it's entirety.

We will be using standard tuning just like the original recording.

The chords used throughout American Pie, are very simple open position chords and there are also just a couple of simple strumming patterns used.

The most difficult thing about learning how to play American Pie is going to be the length of each chord progression. There are simply a ton of chords to memorize.

The many different verses use two different chord progressions depending on whether it is the upbeat verse or a laid back slower verse. I will explain this further in the video lesson.

The chorus sections are pretty consistent so hopefully that shouldn't take too long to get under your fingers.

Just as I mention multiple times in the video lesson, it would be a good idea to write down the name of each chord as I call them out and also mark how many times the strumming pattern is played for that specific chord.

After that, knowing how the song sounds by ear will help you memorize the chord progression a lot faster.

Hope you guys have fun with this classic!

Great lesson, love the song. I would also like to see “starry starry night” by Don McLean.
