Beginner Guitar Lesson – Palm Muting

In this video guitar lesson we will take a look at the technique of palm muting. Palm muting is an essential technique on the guitar no matter what style of music you play.

The most prominent use of palm muting can be found in hard rock and metal music, so I structured the lesson to be geared towards that type of sound. However, even if hard rock and metal isn't your thing, you should still try your best to master this technique. It allows you much more control over dynamics and control of how the string feels when picked. You would be hard pressed to find a guitar style that doesn't use some sort of palm muting.

Be sure to keep a very light touch in your picking hand, that way you can get the full muting sound without completely killing the notes or pulling yourself out of tune.

I’ve been a member for a few days (and did the premium today) and I finally get how this is done. Thanks Carl! I’m glad I took the plunge from just watching the free song lessons to trying to learn the right way to do things!
