Black Smoke Rising Guitar Lesson – Greta Van Fleet

In this Black Smoke Rising guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of the chords to this Great Van Fleet hit.

The tuning is standard tuning.

Guitarist Jake Kiszka opens the track with a a chord progression incorporating basic major and minor chords that have a melody on the 2nd string that is further brought out by rotating back and forth between major and sus2 chords whenever the major chords appear.

The pre-chorus uses Dominant 7th barre chords with the 5th of the chord in the bass. There is also a bit a melodic embellishment along the B string when playing the B7 chord.

The chorus uses basic open position chords with a catchy melodic figure on the open c major chord.

During the bridge the dynamics are  brought down quite a bit. This is the section that varies a lot from the recorded version to the way Jake Kiszka plays it live. I will demonstrate both ways.

Towards the end of the song, under the outro chorus, there is a guitar solo that is buried in the mix. I will show you the scale patterns that Jake Kiszka is using in this solo, but I won't be doing a note-for-note tutorial since the solo itself is too difficult to hear underneath the vocals and rest of the band.

I hope you guys enjoy learning this fun track from Greta Van Fleet!
