By The Way Guitar Lesson – Red Hot Chili Peppers
In this By The Way guitar lesson video, I will demonstrate how to play John Frusciante's killer guitar parts to this smash hit by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The tuning is standard tuning E A D G B E
"By The Way" is a fantastic rhythm guitar workout. It will definitely get your strumming chops in shape.
Most of the strumming during the verse requires a solid left hand muting technique. I will explain how to accomplish that throughout the lesson.
The chorus continues the strumming but in an unmuted fashion that uses mostly basic open chords and a couple of barres. Frusciante does prefer the thumb over technique for some barre chords, so I will cover that, but also show you the standard way of playing those chords if you have trouble with thumb chords.
Pay attention to the very last chorus as well. The chord voicings slightly change there.
