In this Dyers Eve guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of this mammoth metal classic by Metallica, note-for-note!
The tuning is standard tuning.
Boy do you have your work cut out for you today! Dyers Eve is one of the most epic songs Metallica ever wrote and it is filled with many complex and challenging guitar riffs.
I will cover each riff in the order that each appears of the original recording, including any variations that occur over the course of the song.
Of course, the main riff is the controversial one here, and I will make my case for why I believe on the AJFA version of the song, they played 2-3-2-3-2-3 instead of 2-2-2-2-2-2 and I will let you listen to an audio clip of the track slowed down to 30% of the original speed so that you can clearly hear that the riff is played that way.
But like I mention in the video, it doesn't really matter if you play it 2-2-2-2-2-2. Metallica plays it that way live and on the original demo of "Dyers Eve", and it sounds great either way. Of course, it is much easier playing it all 2's. 🙂
I will also cover Kirk Hammett's solo note-for-note. This is one of Kirk's finer moments with tons of hyper-speed licks and cool melodic themes throughout.
So have fun tackling this monster! It was a lot of work to put together, but hopefully you guys will enjoy the challenge!
