This will quite literally be one of the funnest songs you will ever play, especially if you have a tight drummer and bass player to jam with.
In this Suck My Kiss guitar lesson I will show you how to play every note of this Red Hot Chili Peppers hit note-for-note.
We start with a riff consisting of just a few notes played with absolute rhythmic precision, ending with a fast ascending lick containing many slides.
From there we have the main verse riff which requires a very strong sense of rhythm to perform well. Take your time here. Even though the riff seems very simple due to the fact it uses mostly just two notes, the rhythms can be tricky.
The verse also contains a cool riff that requires playing diads separated by multiple strings. It is very unorthodox but sounds great.
Up next is the chorus which again contains some very tricky rhythmic moves and chord work. Songs like "Suck My Kiss" are a great challenge because not only do you learn a lot, but you can have a lot of fun while you are doing it.
Pay close attention when I describe the difference between each of the 3 choruses. They are pretty much exactly the same except for one small part that I show in the lesson. It can actually be quite easy to understand if you break it down to it's simplest form, which I do in the video lesson.
The last thing we will cover in this lesson is the solo. I don't even know how to describe the guitar tone John Frusciante used for this solo. It is very "interesting" I guess. In any case, the solo itself is very cool. There are lots of repetitive legato licks and cool double-stops that end up being tremolo picked all the way up the fretboard.
So I hope you enjoy learning this killer Chili Peppers track and come out of it at the end with better rhythmic skills and a tune that will always get the crowd moving. 🙂
