Take It On The Run Guitar Lesson – REO Speedwagon

In this Take It On The Run guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of this smash hit by REO Speedwagon.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E

The opening acoustic guitar chords played by Kevin Cronin (I play them on electric for convenience) are just simple open position chords. There is a slight difference in how he plays that chord progression after the band comes in, so watch out for that.

I will go through each chord progression found in the song in the order that they each appears on the original recording.

I will also cover Gary Richrath's legendary solo. The first half of the solo, is a harmony guitar solo. Instead of teaching each harmony part, I will just show you how to play the high harmony line, which is what Gary played when he performed it live.

The second half of the solo drops the harmony guitar lines for a single guitar playing some nice melodic ideas with some HUGE bends thrown in there. It is important to remember, that some of the really high bends are performed on the 22nd fret of the high E string. However, I lazy just picked up my strat to film this lesson and it only has 21 frets. Haha... So the bends I am doing in the lesson video, are much larger than the ones your would have to do if you had 22 frets to work with. I explain this in the video lesson as well.

Have fun learning this REO Speedwagon classic! Carl...
